Double-cleansing. In recent months this term has been floating around on various blogs, videos and interviews with everyone and their makeup artist swearing by the practise. While at first it may seem a little OTT – after all who really has time to wash their face twice in one go (more on this below) – upon a second look, it would seem that we’ve all probably dabbled in the double-cleanse at least once in our lives.
When I first heard about the term (and kept continuingly hearing it), I couldn’t help but do a massive eye roll at yet another beauty craze the industry was trying to push in order to get us to buy more product. But then I realised something. I too double cleansed. There were times in the past when I would use my beloved face wipes to clean my face, only to still feel a bit icky from the amount of makeup left on my face. What did I do? I simply washed my face with black soap to ensure my face felt squeaky clean. Even after I made the transition from wipes to cleansing oil, I still found myself cleaning my face a second time with black soap just to get rid of any oil that was left on my face. It wasn’t until I started using the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser that I realised I was partaking in the double-cleanse movement and fully understood what it was.
So, what exactly is double-cleansing, and should we be doing it? In short, double cleansing is the act of cleaning your face twice with two different types of cleansers; and yes. Ideally you should cleanse the first time with an oil or balm, rinse, and then cleanse a second time with either a gel or cream to ensure that any residual dirt and oil is cleaned away. Though there a few conflicting thoughts on whether or not everyone should be double-cleansing, if your face doesn’t feel clean enough after the first wash, there’s no harm in going in for a double-cleanse – so long as you’re using a different product and so long as it’s not super drying like a soap (unless it’s black soap).
My Soy cleanser may have finished, but to this day I still double cleanse: first with my Seaberry Cleansing Oil and then with my Dudu Osun black soap.
