A couple of years ago when I first started my natural hair journey, I came across many hair treatments that promised all sorts of hair miracles. But there was one in particular that really grabbed my attention: the rice water treatment. The stuff of legend, the rice water treatment has been around for centuries, having been used in Asia to help women grow and maintain their hair. This hair treatment has since been adopted by the natural hair community who have seen some pretty spectacular results. I “tried” a variation of the rice water challenge (lol I used water from rice noodles – what was I thinking??!) and vowed that one day I would do the real thing. Well fast forward four years and here we are. After discovering a great rice water treatment tutorial on YouTube, I decided to give it another try.
How Does It Work?
Essentially, the rice water is used as a pre-poo/conditioner treatment that sits on the hair for about twenty to thirty minutes before you rinse it out. I also like to do a quick rinse with the rice water for good measure, before I do a final plain water rinse. The inositol found in rice water is said to penetrate damaged hair and help repair it. Packed with amino acids, B vitamins, Vitamin E, and antioxidants, is it any surprise that many believe in the wonders powers of rice water. What Were My Thoughts?
At the time of writing this blog post, I’ve done this hair treatment twice. After my first treatment, I noticed that my hair felt incredibly thicker – which says a lot because my hair is already naturally quite thick. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m only styling my hair once a fortnight; and since lockdown I’ve decided to keep my hair braided while I rock my wig. I think the combination of truly resting my hair and the treatment is what has led to the increased thickness. As for the length, I think it’s still a bit too soon to tell if my hair has really grown… but **fingers crossed**.
Will I Try It Again?
Of course! I really love doing this treatment so I want to keep doing it throughout the year to see if it can really help with my hair growth. I have quite lofty hair goals this year, so I want to try and do as much as I can reach it.
I promise to keep you posted on my hair journey, so make sure you stay tuned, follow me on Instagram and subscribe to my YouTube channel.
