For the last couple of months I’ve been on the lookout for a way to keep my edges laid and sleek, and to maintain my hair throughout the week. On a recent trip to my local hair shop, I came across the ORS Olive Oil Edge Control Hair Gel. I have to admit that the first two times I used this gel, I had no idea what I was doing. I clumsily applied too much too quickly and couldn’t understand why my hair was weirdly so gloopy and sticky. However, third time must be the charm, because on my third attempt I managed to apply it correctly. Since then, I’ve been using this hair gel religiously every morning before work, to put my edges in place. Read on to find out all the things I like and dislike about the gel.
What I like
- Easy to use
- Despite using this gel wrong on my first two attempts, this product is incredibly easy to use. I simply dip my index fingertip into the gel then apply to hair and slick down. It effortlessly lays my edges down, and leaves me with an overall sleek finish.
- Doesn’t cause build-up
- I was most surprised about the lack of build-up from this hair gel. Because I’m using it every day (and using a fair amount), I thought that naturally it’d leave some residue behind that would eventually lead to greasy edges in need of a wash. What’s more, unlike what I’ve seen with most other gels, this one does not make hair crunchy. However, I found that to not be the case at all. I’ve found that if anything, the olive oil gets absorbed into my hair, leaving me with soft edges, which leads me on to my next point.
- Nourishes hair
- Not only does this hair gel come full of olive oil, which is known to help nourish and moisturise hair, but it’s also packed with sweet almond oil. Almond oil is something of a wonder oil thanks to its protein, omega-9 fatty acids, and vitamin E, making it ideal for strengthening hair and encouraging hair growth. This is especially important for baby hairs as these hairs are more fragile and delicate.
- Smells really nice
- I love the lightly scented smell of this hair gel. At first glance, I was expecting it to smell really artificial and synthetic, so I was very pleased with its sweet smell. I can’t quite put my finger on what exactly it smells of, but for me, it’s a mix between citrus and floral.
What I dislike
As far as dislikes go, there are only a couple of things I’m not a big of when it comes to this hair gel.
- Does not hold for very long at all
- I don’t know if this is because my hair is too thick or too kinky but I’ve noticed that this gel does not hold my edges down for very long. In fact, from the time I’ve finished slicking down my baby hairs to the time I’m on the train, my edges have already started curling up. Obviously, the point of this gel is to keep my edges laying flat for the whole day, so the fact that it only seems to last for about ten minutes is not ideal AT ALL.
- A bit time consuming (but I imagine that all gels are because you need to slick hair down etc.)
- This dislike is less to do with the actual product and more to do with products in general. Having to carefully apply product to my edges is incredibly time-consuming, and bearing in mind that I only have about three minutes to actually do my hair in the morning – I blame my mascara which takes up most of my time.
Anything else?
Watch me apply the gel to my hair in one of my recent YouTube videos.
As I’m now using this gel pretty much every day, I’m sure it’ll soon finish. So make sure you keep an eye out on here, my YouTube channel and Instagram for updates.
