I first mentioned the Maybelline New York Dream Urban Cover in my Currently Using: Makeup for Black Girls post a few weeks ago. At the time of posting, I hadn’t yet used it but was very excited to try. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I’m happy to share that I have finally used it and yes I have a few thoughts on it.
First Impressions
As first impressions go I was extremely impressed. Even in Superdrug when I was swatching the different colours on my hand (yes I know that testing foundations on your hand doesn’t always provide the true match), I was so impressed how three of the colours I tried rubbed seamlessly into my skin.
When it then came to actually trying the foundation on my face, again I was blown away and pleasantly surprised how easily it glided on my face, how quick it was and how natural the finish was.
Pros
I loved how full-coverage yet lightweight the foundation was. It went on like a dream and covered practically everything perfectly on my face. I love that even though it’s a liquid foundation, I was able to apply it easily with my hands and that I was still able to get really good results. And obviously, I can’t forget to mention that the foundation is anti-pollution and has SPF50 which is what sold me in the first place. It lasted all day and made my face look so radiant and fresh albeit a little wet for hours.
Cons
There were only two negatives that I had, though one was more to do with the particular shade that I picked and less about the actual product itself. Like I mentioned above, I “colour matched” to three shades in-store when I swatched them on my hand and ended up buying Mocha. However, after a few wears, I realised that Mocha was a bit dark for me and that I should’ve picked the next shade down, Truffle. That said, however, I think Mocha will work perfectly when I’m tan and a bit darker. The other negative was that after the second day, I started noticing that my cheekbone area was getting considerably dried out. At first, I wasn’t sure if this was because of the setting spray or the foundation so I stopped using the spray. However, when my face was still dry, I stopped using the foundation in the hopes of bringing moisture back to my face.
I have actually stopped using the foundation on account of it being too dark and drying for me, but I do intend to buy Truffle (and the correct setting products) the next time I run out of foundation.
