As someone who wears makeup a lot, summertime can always be a bit challenging – especially on days where the mercury is regularly hitting the mid to high 20s. So how do I make sure my summer makeup lasts all day? The answer is simple, setting spray.
Making your summer makeup last
Over the years I’ve been fairly loyal to setting sprays, but the one that truly stands out above the rest is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. I’ve been using this religiously and easily go through a bottle every month and a half – I’m not even kidding, so you can only imagine how excited I was by the limited edition 200ml (dear Charlotte, if you’re reading this, please relaunch the size because I need it).
I recently started using the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Setting Spray, the spray version of their cult classic primer. And while I can’t say definitively that I love it or would recommend it, it’s definitely one worth checking out.
Long before I discovered Charlotte Tilbury’s addictive setting spray, I was very loyal to the Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray. And while I would buy it again and do recommend it, nothing can top my current favourite.
It’s all in the technique
Now, just because you’ve got setting spray, it doesn’t mean you can apply it any which way. When it comes to making sure your summer makeup will last throughout the hot, sweaty days, the secret lies in your application technique. Long ago, I learned how to make your setting spray work harder by spritzing your face between layers of your makeup. Not only does this ensure your makeup lasts longer, but it also means you’re left with a more natural dewy finish.
My setting spray routine looks a little like this:
- A light spritz after I’ve applied concealer but before blending it out and applying foundation.
- I do another light spritz on my beauty blender right before I start with my foundation.
- Another spritz after I’ve applied my foundation and blended all my base products.
- I add a little setting powder to my undereye area.
- Another spritz after I let the powder rest for a little bit before I apply my mascara and blush.
- Then finally I’ll do one last (very generous) spray once my makeup is complete.
Wow, looking at this, it’s no surprise I run through my setting sprays so quickly. But if you’re truly serious about ensuring your summer makeup is on point in the heat, this is what you need to do.
Anything on my wishlist?
With the Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray as my go-to, you might be wondering what other setting sprays I have my eye on. The mega viral hit from One/Size is right at the top of my wishlist. I’d seen lots of good things about the spray, but it wasn’t until Beyonce’s makeup artist mentioned using it on tour last year that it exploded in the stratosphere and everyone became obsessed with it.
What are some of your favourite setting sprays to use?
