Okay, now I know what you’re thinking. Sunflower oil… for your hair? Don’t worry, you haven’t miss read the title (or that last sentence ahahahaha), today’s post is really about using sunflower oil on your hair and scalp. When it comes to oil treatments, most people are probably more familiar with using olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, castor oil etc., but because I wanted to try something a little bit different (and because my mum has LOADS of the stuff), I decided to try sunflower oil instead. Here’s a mini blurb on what you need to know about sunflower oil. For starters, sunflower oil is actually used a base for a lot of hair products and contains pretty much all the vitamins from A to Z. It also contains potassium, calcium and iron (perfect for my anaemic friends – myself included), good fatty acids that make it great for moisturising and conditioning your scalp and stimulating natural hair growth, essential nutrients and antioxidants. Sunflower oil helps protect against UV rays (basically acting like SPF for your hair) and is easily absorbed by the hair meaning that receiving all these amazing benefits is SUPER easy! So now I’ve shared the rundown with you, let’s get started on this hot oil hair treatment.
I’m not big on using official measurements so I most guess-timated. I poured out enough oil so that it covered the bottom of my pan. It looked to be about two or three full tablespoons.
I then put it on the hob and allowed the oil to heat up, making sure not to leave it on for too long. I know that the microwave may seem like a quicker, easier option, but using a microwave takes away from of those good nutrients I was talking about, as well as making the oil too hot.
When the oil was cool enough, I separated my hair and applied the oil, making sure to smudge it onto my scalp and into my hair with my hands. When my full head was nice and oiled, I massaged my scalp for a few minutes to allow the oil to penetrate and get to work.
I put my hair in a plastic cap for about forty-five minutes to allow enough time for my scalp to absorb the oil and moisturise my hair.
I then rinsed out my hair thoroughly with warm oil and conditioner to get the oil (you know how I feel about oil in my hair).
After I had rinsed and towel dried my hair, I then proceeded to deep condition my hair as I hadn’t done one in about two weeks. Because of this, I can’t be too sure about what the oil treatment did for my hair, but I think it helped intensify my deep conditioner and moisturise my scalp. That being said, the next day when I went to restyle my hair, I noticed that it felt smoother and thicker (although it was also a little rough, but I chalk that up to the fact that I had put product on wet hair so it was only natural for my hair to feel a little dry/rough), and I believe it was the sunflower oil that made my hair feel fuller.
Over the last few months, one of the biggest things I’ve discovered through research is that if you can eat it or drink, you can use it on your hair. So although it may seem a little weird using sunflower oil on my hair, it’s not really all that weird in the grand scheme of things. I’m going to start incorporating oil treatments into my hair regimen so you can be sure to see how I get on with those in the future.
