When it comes to my hair, I’ll try anything at least once (especially if I hear it promises something nice for my hair and/or scalp), so when I read about this banana natural relaxer I jumped at the chance to try it out for myself. Now before I begin, there are a few things I should probably mention. Firstly, I am allergic to bananas. It’s nothing too serious but they make me vomit and insanely nauseous. Secondly, I barely followed the original recipe – I can be quite a rebel when it comes to recipes of any kind he he. Thirdly, when I saw the outcome of all the ingredients mixed together, I decided to use it as a mask instead of a relaxer as the texture was completely gooey and wrong. Oh and fourthly, the final product looked like vomit and I probably gagged about a thousand times. So without any further introduction, here’s a look at my homemade banana mask.
What you’ll need:
Equipment:
-small pan
-sharp knife
-cutting board
-tablespoon
-blender/something to mix everything together
Ingredients:
L-R: argan oil leave-in conditioner, castor oil, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, ground cinnamon and three bananas |
Method:
I couldn’t be bothered to blend it (which was most probably my downfall in the end) so opted to mash it instead |
add water to help mash/blend |
a tablespoon of cinnamon |
a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil |
a tablespoon of argan oil |
a tablespoon of coconut oil |
a tablespoon of castor oil |
mix/blend it altogether |
I was left with slightly runny mixture that felt more like a body scrub but what can you do… |
cover with clingfilm then put in the fridge for a few hours |
when you’re ready to use, simply heat it up and stir |
NB. before I covered the mixture and put it in the fridge, I added more tablespoons of everything and an extra banana. Even though the original recipe recommended sieving everything, I kept the bits (and learnt the hardway why it’s best to sieve everything). I also added WAY too much water, but I’ll talk more about my mistakes and what I learned from this experience in more detail next week.
Make sure you check out next week to hear more about my experience with this mask. You can also find the original recipe here (which I will definitely have to try…again).
