It feels like just yesterday when I discovered Aurelia Probiotic Skincare on Net-a-Porter and used their Botanical Cream Deodorant for the first time. In today’s post, I’m sharing a very detailed and thorough review of my experiences using this deodorant. Before I get into that, I want to start by saying this is the very first time I’ve used a natural aluminium deodorant. Over the years I’ve read and heard a lot (some good, some bad) about natural deodorants, so even though I had an idea of what to expect, I couldn’t know for sure how it’d be more for me. For more on my first impressions, you can check that out here.
Pros
- The smell was insane (in the best way) – smelt like peppermint and the essential oils were oh so relaxing and satisfying
- Aluminium free. This was incredibly important to me and was actually the reason why I bought it in the first place. Though there is no scientific evidence than aluminium is “bad”, I’ve read a few studies that show how cancer can be attributed to aluminium, and that show the negative effects of aluminium. Whether or not this is true, I’d rather not have a substance like this going anywhere near my armpits or boobs – especially since I had a cyst in my armpit when I was a teenager and still have a small benign one.
- The jar lasted much longer than I expected. In fact, I’ll even be so bold and say that it lasted a lot longer than some of my other deodorants. I started using it in the summer, and finished it last Friday (13th).
- In the beginning, I noticed that halfway through the day, I would get wafts of peppermint, which made me confident that it was helping with body odour. And let tell you, there’s nothing better than getting a sweet waft peppermint at 4pm when you’re ready for an afternoon nap.
- It’s healthier and a lot safer than most other deodorants. This one goes back to being aluminium-free. I love that instead of being injected with harmful chemicals, this cream deodorant is packed with essential oils (tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, bergamot), arrowroot, kaolin and shea butter. It feels amazing knowing that I’m not putting toxic ingredients on my skin, that would eventually be absorbed by my skin.
Cons
- Having to use your fingers to apply. This means that you get slowed down, as you have to wipe your fingers afterwards before you can do anything else with your hands. This was by far the biggest con for me. The thought of armpits is already pretty gross, but then to actually have to touch your armpits every day to massage this cream into them, is no-no.
- I wish they had a stick version which would be less messy and way easier to apply.
- On days when I wasn’t wearing it, my BO was so bad and smelt seriously funky. I can’t explain it, but wearing this deodorant meant that when I wasn’t wearing it, I smelt HORRIBLE.
- Sometimes it felt like it wasn’t strong enough. There were times when this deodorant really had my back and kept me smelling fresh for hours! But then there were days when I felt like no matter how much I put on, it just wasn’t enough to keep me feeling dry and not stinky.
- Transferred onto clothing, especially black clothing. This was honestly the bane of my life for the longest time and was not ideal in the summer when I was mostly wearing black vests. I didn’t like how to transferred so easily and found that I had to wait a while before getting dressed – which slowed me down more. I also found that if I sweat in the day, my sweat would cause the cream to run and transfer even more. Grrrr…
- The price. At £18, this deodorant is pricey, especially when you compare it to other deodorants on the market, and probably isn’t something the average person could rebuy as often as a Dove deodorant. On the other hand, this did last me a long time and is better than other deodorants.
Anything Else?
This is definitely a deodorant for when you’re not doing a lot and will likely spend most of the day either stationary or walking gently. This is most definitely NOT for extreme sport, fast walking, running to the station or after the bus. I first used it during the summer heatwave, which was a great test to see how it would fare. In all fairness, I’d say it actually held up a lot better than I thought it would.
Would I Buy Again?
I really want to say yes, but unfortunately, I don’t see myself buying this again in the near future. While I did really enjoy using this deodorant and found it great, the cons outweighed the pros a little toooo much. However, I would recommend it to someone looking to try an aluminium-free deodorant (and has the cash to spare) as it is a genuinely good product – it just doesn’t fulfil all my needs i.e., running after to the tube station. That said, I do really love Aurelia Probiotic Skincare and everything they stand for. I also still have a brightening essence to try, so keep an eye out for a review soon.
Now that I’ve finished this deodorant, I’m going to be using the Sanex Dermo Invisible 24h Deodorant that I picked up last weekend. I look forward to sharing that with you later.
Have you tried the Aurelia Probiotic Skincare deodorant? What are your thoughts on natural and aluminium-free deodorants? I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below.
