Today I’m continuing with my new series Currently Using by sharing all the hair products I’m using at the moment. I’ve talked about a lot of these products individually on the blog before, but in this post, I’ll be explaining in detail the order I use each product and when I use each product. I’ve split this post into three sections: Wash Day, Styling and Maintenance to make it easier.
Pssst. Today’s post is going to be a long one, so make sure you’re comfortable with a snack or seated on your commute 😉
Wash Day
To see my wash day hair routine, you can check out my YouTube video here.
The order in which I use the first two products sometimes varies, but for the last couple of months I’ve been using them in this order.
I slather my hair in the Vitale Olive Oil Mayonnaise and make sure I cover from the root to tip. I’ve been using this since I went natural and it honestly made the biggest difference to my hair. Hair that was originally broken and damaged is now thriving, strong and nourished. I tend to leave this on for about an hour or so.
I then rinse that all out with the Crème Of Nature Pure-Licious Co-Wash. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve talked about this cleansing conditioner on the blog. It cleans your hair without stripping it of its moisture and also conditions it. After using this, my hair and scalp always feels light as a feather.
Sidenote: I always, always, ALWAYS, use a basic t-shirt to dry my hair. I wrote a blog post about this a couple of years ago and since then I’ve never used a towel to dry my hair. Once my hair is drip-dry, I’ll leave it to hair dry a bit until it’s somewhere between damp and dry before moving on to the next step.
Next up is the ORS Monoi Oil Anti Breakage Curl Perfecting Buttermilk. I’ve been using this for about a year or so and only use this when my hair is damp. I section my hair into four and then apply each section with a generous amount. This helps to hydrate and nourish my hair and honestly stops my hair from drying out. Before I started using this, I would find that whenever I put anything on my hair when it was wet, my hair would get soooo dry.
After this, I divide my hair in half vertically and use aloe vera oil to massage my hair and scalp. I haven’t always liked using oil on my hair as it always made my hair really greasy and too oily (duh) without actually moisturising my hair. But I’ve found that this oil works wonders for my hair and keeps it moisturised without the gross greasiness.
Styling
These days I only style my hair once a week (full post on this coming next week), so I don’t use these products as often as I used to.
I start with the Blue Magic Tea Tree Oil Leave-In Conditioner and apply to my hair sectioning horizontally. I’ve been using this leave-in conditioner for YEARS and I’ve written so much about it since I’ve had this blog.
Next, I used to ORS Monoi Oil Anti Breakage Leave-In Conditioner, and apply this to my hair, sectioning vertically. I’ve been using this for over a year and have written about the wonders of monoi oil and why it should be part of your natural hair routine.
After this, I will divide my hair in half horizontally and then moisturise my hair with the IC Shea Butter Deep Oil Moisturizer with Cocoa & Mango Butter.
I’ve been using moringa oil for the last couple of weeks and I must say I really love using it. I use it after separating my “fringe” from my bun and then massage each section. My hair always feels so soft and fluffy when I take it out of my bun and I’m pretty sure it’s down to this oil!
And then finally, to help get my hair slick enough to fit into a bun (although I don’t really have that problem anymore) I’ll apply the Soft & Botanicals Ultra Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner. This stuff is amazing and has A LOT of slip, so it really does help get my hair into a wet-like easily manipulated state.
Maintenance
Though I’m only styling my hair once a week, I always make sure to apply something to my hair every day. I start by applying the IC Shea Butter Deep Oil Moisturizer to my hair, making sure to rub it in.
I then finish off with the Paltas B.K.C. Leave-In Conditioning Spray and spritz my hair all over – especially if there are bits I missed with the moisturiser.
This may seem like a lot, but in the moment it’s not really that bad. These products are also great if you have relaxed hair or are transitioning to natural hair. Like I mentioned above, I used a lot of these while I was transitioning and I found they helped by hair a lot.
On Friday I’m going to be sharing ALLLLL the skincare products I’m currently using day and night, so make sure you check back then. If you want to see what makeup I’m currently using, then you can check that out here.
