I don’t shampoo my hair. After I found out that shampoo wasn’t compulsory and that in most cases it was actually kind of bad for my natural hair, I stopped using it regularly. In fact, I only used it once a month as a way of removing all the product build-up that comes from applying a whole arsenal of moisturisers, lotions and sprays every single day. But then as time went on, I stopped shampooing and simply co-washed (washing with just conditioner).
While co-washing with any old conditioner is okay, it doesn’t actually replace the role of shampoo ie, cleansing the hair and removing dirt etc. I wanted to try a real co-washing product that would replace shampoo without any of its drying results. Now, after what’s felt like an eternity, I finally managed to pick up this co-wash in my last hair haul. And I’ve already used it twice.
The first time I used it, I absolutely loved it. Like usual, I had a fair amount of product build-up but this co-wash completely blitzed through it all with little to no effort. Unlike with most shampoos and conditioners, I didn’t have to massage and rinse my hair a billion times to wash out the product or get my hair clean. In fact, I only rinsed twice! The only downside though was that I could taste the product in my mouth throughout the whole day. You know how people say the skin (and scalp in particular) is extremely absorbent so you need to be careful about what you put on it? Well, that couldn’t be truer. I had a plastic-y gross taste, and the smell was so awful.
The second time I used it my experience was the same and different. It was the same in the case that it cleaned my hair and scalp in a heartbeat and that I wasn’t wasting time or water rinsing. I also noticed that unlike the first time I used it, my hair didn’t shrink as much, so I was left with a lot more length retention. And how was it different? This time the product didn’t seep into my scalp too much so I wasn’t left with a bad taste in my mouth.
as you can see my hair is wet but it’s still hanging around the nape of my neck |
I can definitely see myself using this co-wash every time I was my wash from now on.
