Last week my mum surprised me with these Vitamin C Radiance Maximising Serums from Avon’s Anew skincare line. I’ve spoken a little bit about the wonders of vitamin C and why it should be incorporated into our skincare routines, so I was over the moon when my mum gave these to me. In fact, I’d actually also been telling my mum about how vitamin C is for skin, especially for black women, and I’m glad she listened and took my advice – not that she really needs the advice as her skin is absolutely flawless without a single blemish or dark spot in sight! I’m still yet to replace my Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Serum, so I thought I’d give this serum a go.
First impressions
The very first thing I noticed about the serum was how runny it was. By squeezing the sachet you would never have thought it’d be that runny, and it was something I was very unprepared for, especially considering how I was taking pictures as well and had to rush before any slipped off my hand. Because it was so runny, I didn’t expect it to be so runny, I ended up squeezing out a bit too much onto my hand which made it even more runny (if that makes sense).
When I applied it on my face, I instantly got a strong whiff of its citrusy and orangey scent, which I found to be quite overpowering. Again, because I put out too much, this made the smell stronger. I think that if I had only squeezed out a little bit, it wouldn’t have been quite as intoxicating… which then brings me on to my next observation.
From the moment it touched my cheeks, I could instantly tell this was loaded with alcohol. The taste from it absorbing into my skin, the texture and feel of it tingling on my cheeks were also big giveaways too. I know that a lot of skincare products use alcohol, and even though I’m not too fussed about it, because I’ve been using Fresh for the last year or so, I’m not used to the presence of alcohol. Going back to my first point, if the serum hadn’t had been as runny as it was, and I wouldn’t have poured out as much as I had, I feel like the alcohol wouldn’t have been as strong.
I also found that the Maximising Serum absorbed really quickly into my skin and that it was so moisturising and hydrating! You guys know how dry my skin can get, and how long it took me to find the product combination to combat the dryness. Since finding that miracle combination, I haven’t been that bothered about finding hydrating products, but it’s nice to know that I’ve found another serum that’ll help keep my face from getting dry!
I then followed up with the Nivea Q10 Plus C Anti-Wrinkle + Energy Day Cream, the Fresh Black Tea Age Delay Eye Concentrate and the Nivea Sun UV Face Q10 & Anti-Pigments sunscreen. One of the last things I noticed about my face was how bright and glowy it was for the rest of the morning, and even my sister commented on it too.
I think if I continue to use this serum alongside the day cream, I could see some very interesting results – fingers crossed. After today I also feel ready to give The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin another try as I really believe using all three products could do wonders for my skin. I’ll talk more about this on Friday so make sure you check back then. I still have two and a half sachets left, so I’ll be sharing my final thoughts once I’ve finished them all.
